Leeds United were recently linked with a summer move to bring in David Stockdale from Brighton and Hove Albion. The 31-year-old, who was born in Leeds, was being linked with plenty of clubs this summer after an impressive campaign in the Championship.

The Yorkshireman, who was named the Championship’s best goalkeeper this season, was set to become a free agent this summer but, as the Daily Mail reported this week, Stockdale is now set to sign a two-year contract extension at Brighton.

Rightly so, as he would have been mad to sign a deal with Leeds.

No doubt, playing for a side the size of Leeds is a big achievement, especially when you are from the city.

However, Stockdale has just earned promotion with the Seagulls and is on the verge of embarking on a brilliant period in his career with the newly promoted side. Staying in the Championship would have been a foolish move.

Especially as there was no guarantee he would be first-choice at Leeds. The West Yorkshire side are very happy with their current number one Rob Green and would surely not be rushing to replace him with a stopper also in his 30’s.

Stockdale is making the right call by remaining at Brighton.
