Sunderland host Birmingham City in a hugely important game towards the bottom of the Championship.

David Prutton has told Sky Sports that he is expecting Sunderland to make it back to back wins in the Championship when they face Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light this weekend.

The Black Cats finally brought an end to their staggering run without a home win last Saturday as a late Josh Maja goal saw them claim a 1-0 win over Fulham.

The three points meant that Sunderland have now won three games in the league all season, with two of those victories coming in the five games that Chris Coleman has taken charge of. And the win lifted the Black Cats out of the bottom three.

Birmingham however, find themselves bottom of the table having lost four of their last five games, two points behind their opponents this weekend. And Prutton has predicted that that gap will get larger following this weekend.

“Sunderland finally, finally ended that disastrous run at home last week! They may have scraped through against Fulham but on occasions like that it’s just about the result rather than the performance,” he told Sky Sports while explaining why he is explaining a 1-0 victory for the home side.

“It also lifted Chris Coleman’s side out of the bottom three and that should give them confidence against Birmingham, who are rooted to the foot of the table. It won’t be pretty, but I feel like this will be another narrow home win for the Black Cats.”

It is certainly a game that Steve Cotterill’s men cannot really afford to lose. Though they are still some way off being cut adrift at the bottom, the psychological blow of losing such a game may make that gap to those above the bottom three seem much greater.

Sunderland meanwhile, will feel that three points in Saturday’s game will give them a major boost as they try to put some significant daylight between themselves and the bottom three, especially as they will move right up the form table if they make it three wins in their last five.
