Celtic legend David Provan has criticised Rangers striker Jermain Defoe in The Scottish Sun for his recent comments.

Following Rangers’ disappointing defeat at the hands of Aberdeen at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay this past Tuesday evening, Defoe made some very interesting comments.

As quoted in The Herald, the former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur striker – signed on loan from Premier League club Bournemouth in the January transfer window – said that Rangers fans should be excited about the future of the Ibrox club.

With Rangers getting knocked out of the Scottish Cup and struggling to keep up with bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race, it does look like that Steven Gerrard’s side are going to end the season without any major trophy.

Former Celtic and Scotland international winger Provan has criticised Defoe for his comments, and believes that the remarks are baffling.

Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “Supporters who can think for themselves will see through the remarks of Defoe.

“Even allowing for the tripe football clubs feed supporters through club magazines and in-house TV channels, Defoe’s comments were baffling.

“The striker reckons it’s a time for the fans to be excited? Try telling that to supporters who watched the lights go out on Gers’ season in midweek.

“As usual, Gerrard fronted up after the Aberdeen defeat, accepting his share of responsibility. A few of his players should try doing the same.”

Defoe has made four starts and five substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers, scoring five goals in the process, according to WhoScored.
