David Provan has criticised Celtic’s reported pursuit of Steven Fletcher in The Scottish Sun.

BBC Sport has reported that the Hoops are interested in signing Fletcher on a free transfer this summer.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon himself has said that the club are in talks with the 33-year-old Scotland international striker, who is a free agent at the moment after leaving Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship at the end of the past season, as reported on BBC Sport.

Club legend Provan is not impressed, and he does not believe that the former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland striker would be a good signing for the Hoops.

Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “In the week Rangers shelled out £6million on Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten, Celtic were in talks with 33-year-old Sheffield Wednesday free transfer Steven Fletcher.

“Is Peter Lawwell having a laugh? I know Covid-19 has hit club finances hard but the best-paid blazer in Scottish football has to up his game.

“If injury-prone Fletcher is the extent of Lawwell’s ambition, he needs a word with himself.”

The Celtic legend added: “Spare me the idea Fletcher is the solution. The time to sign the ex-Scotland striker was more than a decade ago. Back then Lawwell was outgunned by Burnley for him.”

Good short-term signing for Celtic?

Fletcher is 33 years of age, and there is no doubt that he is not a long-term signing.

However, Celtic do not need a striker for the long term right now, as Odsonne Edouard is doing just fine and is the undisputed main man in Lennon’s frontline.

What the Hoops need at the moment is a different option, an experienced player who can score goals off the bench and can also step in should Edouard have an injury or a dip in form.

In that respect, Fletcher would be a good signing, especially as he is a free agent and scored 13 goals in the Championship in 2019-20 and 11 goals in 2018-19 for Wednesday, according to WhoScored.
