Pedro Caixinha’s Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers have not made a great start to the 2017-18 Scottish Premiership season, and former Celtic winger David Provan does not expect him to last the entire campaign.
Caixinha was appointed the Rangers manager in March 2017 following the departure of Mark Warburton, who is now in charge of Nottingham Forest in the Championship in England.
The Gers finished third in the league last season behind winners and Old Firm rivals Celtic and Aberdeen, who ended up second in the standings.
The Ibrox outfit are not expected to win the Scottish Premiership title this season, as Celtic remain the firm favourites and have the strongest squad in Scotland.
However, many will expect Rangers to at least give the Bhoys a run for their money and try to close the gap.
The Gers, though, have not made a great start to the 2017-18 Scottish Premiership campaign, having picked up just four points from three matches.
Celtic, St. Johnstone and Aberdeen all have won their respective three league fixtures so far this season.
Former Celtic winger Provan has suggested that Caixinha will lose his managerial job at Rangers before the season ends.
Meanwhile, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has said that Rangers need to sack Caixinha for them to be successful.
“While Rangers are laying new foundations, Celtic have already left the building,” Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun. “Unless Gers discover oil under Ibrox, Celtic will play monopoly with the Premiership for years.
“May 2021 will see the Hoops seal Ten in a Row, with more to come. By that time, Pedro Caixinha will be long gone.
“I feel for Caixinha. An intelligent, likeable individual, the Portuguese just happens to be in the wrong movie. If I was a betting man, I wouldn’t back him to last the season. Bottom line is that Rangers should have hired Derek McInnes.
“Bagging McInnes while weakening Aberdeen at the same time was a no-brainer. Instead, they’ve taken a needless gamble on Caixinha who must be dreading the next Old Firm game already.”
“If they change manager yes,” The Scottish Sun quotes Sutton as saying when asked if if Rangers have what it takes to finish above Aberdeen and Hibernian.
“I like the signing of Graham Dorrans and I like the signing of [Bruno] Alves. Whatever you say about Dave King, he backed the club in the summer.
“I just think if you’re in charge now, seeing the way the coaching staff is conducting themselves, they need to make a decision. The club is in turmoil – it’s a total mess.”
