Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers should take inspiration from Southampton’s appointment of Mauricio Pochettino in 2013, suggests former Celtic star David Provan.

Former Celtic winger David Provan has written in The Scottish Sun that Rangers need to do proper due diligence on their next manager.

Rangers are on the hunt for a new permanent manager following the recent departure of Pedro Caixinha.

Caixinha was dismissed by the Gers due to a run of poor results in the Scottish Premiership.

Performances and results have improved since then, with the Ibrox outfit now six points behind leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The 61-year-old former Scotland international has pointed at Southampton’s appointment of Mauricio Pochettino back in 2013 as something to take inspiration from.

Pochettino arrived at Southampton in 2013 and has established himself as one of the best managers in England.

Having achieved remarkable success at the Saints, the Argentine boss has transformed Tottenham Hotspur from a team that was failing to finish in the top four to a side that consistently challenge for the Premier League title.

“When Southampton appointed Mauricio Pochettino as boss, I found myself sitting next to him in a south-coast hotel,” Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun. “His English was sound, but the perfectionist in him saw Poch use an interpreter for a year.

“The Saints’ board was slaughtered for hiring an unknown Argentine just sacked by Espanyol. Five years later, he’s taking Real Madrid’s scalp in the Champions League as Spurs boss.

“More reason for those in charge at Rangers to do proper due diligence on their next boss.”
