Celtic’s James Forrest and Allan McGregor of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers win praise from David Provan.

Writing in The Scottish Sun, David Provan has praised Celtic’s James Forrest after his midweek heroics, and admitted it’s ‘hard to believe’ that some Rangers fans were against Allan McGregor’s return.

The Celtic winger lit up Hampden Park by scoring a hat-trick as Scotland beat Israel, but the Rangers goalkeeper was no less heroic.

McGregor pulled off a stunning last-minute save to preserve the hosts’ 3-2 lead and help Scotland book a Euro 2020 playoff spot in the process.

Forrest has arguably been the Hoops’ best player this season and the same could be said for McGregor at Ibrox, after returning to Glasgow in the summer.

The 36-year-old quit the Gers in 2012 after winning 11 major titles, and some fans of the Ibrox club weren’t keen on him returning as a result of turning his back on them.

Provan told The Scottish Sun: “James Forrest deserved every ounce of the praise he got after Scotland’s double header.

“The Hoops winger ticks every box for a wide player but hasn’t always put it together.

“But if Forrest was Scotland’s star turn, Allan McGregor wasn’t far behind with that wonder save from Tomer Hemed. Hard to believe some Rangers punters didn’t want him back at Ibrox.”

Provan is right. It seems bizarre that some supporters were against his return, considering how brilliant McGregor has been at Rangers this season.

If you had to pick the Blues’ best player under Steven Gerrard, few would look too far past the veteran Scot.
