David Provan has stated in The Scottish Sun that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers would not have been able to stop Celtic this season.
The former Celtic star made the comments in the wake of Celtic being awarded the title after the Scottish Premiership season was called off early.
The SPFL have announced that the final league table has been decided on a points-per-game basis, meaning that Rangers have ended up second behind their bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.
When the Scottish top flight was cancelled, Rangers were 13 points behind the Hoops in second place.
Gerrard’s side had a game in hand, and there were also two Old Firm derbies left to be played.
Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “Spare me the idea Steven Gerrard’s side could still have stopped nine in a row.
“While Celtic were going like a steam train before this pandemic, there was nothing in Rangers’ form to suggest they’d run the Hoops close. The clever money would have been on Celtic widening the gap.”
Realistic
Rangers did give Celtic a run for their money in the first half of the season, but the Gers faded day away after the mid-season winter break.
While there was still a chance that the Gers could have caught the Hoops, realistically Neil Lennon’s side would have won the title without suffering a late collapse.
Celtic have now won the Scottish Premiership title nine seasons in a row.
