Celtic legend David Provan has strongly criticised Rangers manager Steven Gerrard in The Scottish Sun for his stance on Kemar Roofe.
Rangers manager Gerrard was not happy that Roofe has been suspended retrospectively, as the Liverpool legend told PLZ Soccer.
The former Leeds United striker – who cost Rangers €5 million (£4.38 million) in transfer fees when they signed him from Anderlecht in the summer of 2020, according to Dhnet.be – has been banned for two matches after being found guilty of dangerous foul play when he challenged St. Johnstone midfielder Murray Davidson.
Former Celtic star Provan has slammed Gerrard for his stance on Roofe and has criticised the striker’s challenge.
Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “If Rangers were right to highlight inconsistencies in the SFA’s disciplinary system, they forfeited their credibility by appealing Kemar Roofe’s ban.
“Does Steven Gerrard really believe Roofe’s over- the-ball lunge at Murray Davidson was a yellow-card offence? With his foot planted at impact, Davidson was fortunate to avoid serious injury.
“St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson felt the tackle wasn’t malicious but that’s not the point. It was a challenge that could have caused more serious damage.”

Not a big miss for Rangers?
Roofe is one of the most important players for Rangers, but the striker’s absence will probably not be felt much by the Gers.
After all, Rangers are as many as 21 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment and look set to win the title.
Roofe has scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 13 league starts for the Gers this season, according to WhoScored.
