Rangers forward Kyle Lafferty is one of the best players for Northern Ireland, but the Gers star, who joined Steven Gerrard’s side in the summer transfer window, is not part of his national team during the international break this month.
Lafferty, who moved to Rangers from Heart of Midlothian in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by The Glasgow Evening Times to be worth £500,000, pulled out of Northern Ireland’s matches against Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina this month.
The 31-year-old Rangers forward pulled out citing an Achilles problem at midnight last Sunday, with Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill admitting his disappointment at the former Norwich City man’s decision, as quoted in The Daily Mail.
Former Celtic and Scotland international winger David Provan has given his take on Lafferty’s current situation with the Northern Ireland team.
The 62-year-old has suggested that Northern Ireland manager O’Neill will have no option other than to accept Rangers forward Lafferty – who is one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership – back into the squad.
Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “What can O’Neill do? Is he going to drop the player whose goals got Northern Ireland to the finals of Euro 2016? Not a chance.”
