David Ornstein has shed some light as to why Antonio Rudiger turned down a move to Tottenham Hotspur toward the end of the summer transfer window.
According to Goal, the Germany international, who joined Chelsea for £29 million in 2017, snubbed the chance to join Jose Mourinho’s side last month.
Since then, the 27-year-old has only played twice for the Stamford Bridge club – both in the Champions League and they remain his only two appearances of the season in any competition.
It was a loan move that Tottenham reportedly wanted.
But according to Ornstein, speaking on The Athletic’s YouTube channel, the German thought a short-term move across the capital to North London and a return next summer might make things a little messy with regards to his long-term future wiith the Blues.
He said: “It was Rudiger who actually turned down a move to Tottenham. He felt that going from Chelsea on loan to Spurs and potentially back again might make life very difficult.”
If Mourinho still wants him then maybe, just maybe, Rudiger might reconsider his stance in January.
After all, he desperately needs regular football during the second half of the campaign if he wants to play for his country in the European Championships next summer and perhaps he might not turn down the same chance a second time.
