Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, David Ornstein has been discussing Liverpool and their supposed hunt for a new midfielder.

The Reds’ slow start to the season – prior to their 9-0 win against Bournemouth, saw many rumours surface about a potential late transfer for a midfielder.

The Merseyside club’s midfield has been decimated by injuries as of late, and it’s been widely reported that a blockbuster signing in that position is on the cards for next summer.

However, many have claimed that those plans could be accelerated in the coming days, with the likes of Sander Berge and Konrad Laimer linked.

Sadly though, Ornstein says he’s checked out these links and the word he’s getting is that Liverpool probably won’t be adding anything to their squad unless an incredible opportunity presents itself.

What’s been said?

Ornstein spoke about Liverpool’s transfer plans.

“It’s interesting this one. There are reports out there about Sander Berge and Konrad Laimer, we’ve checked these out and haven’t really established that they are Liverpool targets, or anything is happening. Calls I’ve made around this have suggested that Liverpool probably won’t bring anything in unless there’s an exceptional opportunity that is very good value for money,” Ornstein said.

Slow and steady wins the race

Liverpool could jump in and sign a midfielder like Sander Berge over the next two days, but their long-term plan has been to wait until next summer and make a marquee signing then.

Yes, they will probably suffer for it in the short-term, but come 2023, would Liverpool rather have Berge or someone like Jude Bellingham in the team?

Football is an ever-evolving game, and while there’s always the temptation to look towards the next game, Liverpool’s success has always come from building a long-term project, and that’s what they need to continue to do.

Berge or Laimer would be decent signings, but it sounds like a truly groundbreaking arrival could be due next summer.
