Around about 12 months ago, Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s brilliant former Sporting Director, announced that he was going to leave the Reds.
The transfer guru penned an open letter to Liverpool fans explaining his decision, and it was announced that Julian Ward would be taking over his responsibilities.
As ever, we’ve not seen or heard much about Ward or Edwards in recent months, and it’s now come to the fore that Edwards was actually still at Liverpool during the last transfer window.
Indeed, speaking on The Overlap, David Ornstein says that while Edwards announced he was leaving last November, he didn’t actually depart Anfield until the end of the summer transfer window, when the handover to Julian Ward was completed.

Edwards has only just left
Ornstein gave an update about Edwards and Ward.
“At the same time someone who was integral to building this project, Michael Edwards, has decided it was time for him to go. Maybe he felt it was the end of his cycle,” Neville said.
“He only left a few weeks ago didn’t he or a month ago?” Neville asked
“He announced he was leaving a year ago, but he formally left at the end of the transfer window, and that completed the handover to Julian Ward who was his assistant.”
A new era
Many Liverpool fans and pundits viewed this summer as the beginning of a new era for the club as Edwards departed and Ward took charge.
However, that doesn’t actually seem to have been the case.
Edwards was still at Liverpool this summer, and while he probably didn’t have the final say on transfers as he usually does, he was still there to guide and advise Ward on the big calls he had to make.
This new era at Liverpool starts now, and it will be very interesting to see how Ward operates without Edwards alongside him.
