David O’Leary spent four years as Leeds United’s manager.
Former Leeds United manager David O’Leary has revealed to LUTV that fans of the Elland Road club often ask him when he’s coming back.
The 59-year-old spent four memorable years as Leeds boss until 2002 in a brilliant spell which yielded semi-final spots in the UEFA Cup and Champions League.
O’Leary was sacked and replaced with Terry Venables in June 2002 and it’s safe to say that the Whites haven’t been the same force since the Irishman and a host of all-star players began leaving West Yorkshire following a mountain of financial issues.
The former Republic of Ireland defender has had a three-year spell at Aston Villa since, along with a brief stint with Al-Ahli, but hasn’t worked as a manager since 2011.
But O’Leary reveals that Leeds fans often ask him when he is coming back to manage United.
He told LUTV when asked what Leeds fans ask him the most: “When are you coming back! It’s embarrassing really. I’m so privileged that they still remember me.
“It’s just so nice and I always knew that I had their support, and I appreciate their support even more now. Twenty years and they still remember me – I can’t believe that!”
Whites supporters respect what O’Leary managed during his stint, but they wouldn’t swap him for Thomas Christiansen at the moment.
Under the 44-year-old, Leeds are one point adrift of the top six and there’s nothing to stop the Yorkshire side from finishing in the playoff places come May.
