Coming up to two months ago, Derby County sealed a move to sign David Nugent from Middlesbrough, for a fee The BBC reported to be £2.5 million.

Derby beat competition from Leeds United, with The Sun reporting the striker was open to a switch to the Whites.

Nugent’s first game was for Derby against Leeds, coming off the bench in a 1-0 loss at Elland Road.

The experienced striker could not make an impact, and this is true not just of that game, but his entire spell as a Derby player so far.

The Rams are now in a woeful run of form, and did not win a single game in February.

Nugent has managed only one start for Steve McClaren’s side, and five appearances from the bench.

Crucially he is yet to score a single goal or provide any assists.

At Leeds he would not have displaced 20 goal forward Chris Wood, but there was potentially an opening as his back-up, with Marcus Antonsson failing to score in the league since September.

So far his transfer seems like a relatively expensive outlay on a 31-year-old forward, and Nugent has not improved Derby County.

It could have turned out very differently at Leeds United, but he is yet to make them regret missing out on him.
