West Ham United were linked with a move for Newcastle United star Jonjo Shelvey in January.

West Ham and Newcastle both look to be there or thereabouts when it comes to securing Premier League survival after a recent upturn in results.

The Hammers will feel one more win is needed to seal their safety and David Moyes knows keeping West Ham up will see him rewarded with a longer-term contract.

Meanwhile Rafa Benitez – a former Hammers managerial target – is refusing to let his side rest on their laurels despite sitting pretty on 38 points.

Both clubs will want to ensure they are not in this situation again next season and will be determind to get it right in the transfer market this summer.

But could Moyes and West Ham live to regret their failure once again to land boyhood Hammers fan Jonjo Shelvey back in January after they were heavily linked with the then out of favour midfielder, as reported by the likes of The Sun.

Shelvey started his youth career at West Ham and comes from a family of Hammers but left the club after his brother was released.

His career since has taken him from Charlton to Liverpool and Newcastle via Swansea City.

But despite being linked with an emotional return to East London several times, the Hammers have never pushed the boat out to bring Shelvey home.

After his petulance on the pitch cost his team earlier this season, Shelvey fell out of favour with Benitez at St James’ Park.

But he had all the attributes West Ham needed to make a big difference for the club and as a fan there would be no lack of fight either.

And the 25-year-old would be welcomed with open arms by supporters who will never forget his crossed Hammers salute to Millwall fans at the Den when taking a corner during his time at Blackpool.

Since then, though, Shelvey has been in imperious form for the Magpies, to such an extent that there have been calls from fans and pundits for him to be included in Gareth Southgate’s Russia World Cup squad this summer.

With his price now more than likely vastly inflated to what the Hammers might have got him for in January, it appears the East Londoners will regret not bringing him home when they had the chance.
