The Sunderland manager has been discussing the example players like Jermain Defoe and Jordan Pickford have set for youngster’s ambitions of playing for England.

Despite their torrid form this season, and the fact that the club are edging closer to relegation to the Championship, Sunderland manager David Moyes has recently suggested that Sunderland are still an excellent option for players seeking a club which will boost their chances of getting in the England squad.

Over the course of the year, Sunderland have seen club captain Jermain Defoe, now aged 34, and young goalkeeper Jordan Pickford both selected for national duty, and a succession of impressive displays in a side struggling for form.

And in a recent interview with Sky Sports, David Moyes has suggested that the call-ups these two players have received may well entice players with international ambitions to come and play for Sunderland, despite the threat of relegation:

It’s a great message for all the young English players who I can see not getting games at their clubs,” said the Sunderland manager.

Why don’t you come to Sunderland and you will get a good chance of becoming an England international?

What a good advertisement for a lot of those young players who are not getting games regularly at some of the bigger clubs.”

With relegation on the horizon, Moyes will have to act fast if he wants to keep Sunderland as an attractive destination for England hopefuls, as we very much doubt they will be able to attract any if relegated to the Championship. However, it’s not over until its mathematically said and done, and after last season’s great escape, you’d be foolish to rule out Sunderland just yet.
