The West Ham United striker was booed by the visiting fans.
David Moyes has told Football London that he was “surprised” to hear West Ham United fans’ booing of Andy Carroll on Sunday.
Moyes failed to enjoy a winning start as West Ham boss as the Irons went down 2-0 at Watford.
The Scottish manager did not draw good performances from a host of his first-team squad, but Carroll, who could have been sent off for an elbow after just 28 minutes, was among the worst.
Carroll criticised West Ham supporters for leaving early during the defeat by Liverpool before the international break and the big striker was booed off by the visiting fans on 65 minutes.
Such treatment has surprised the new boss, who says that the former Newcastle hitman has been “correct” in training so far.
“I’ve got to say, I didn’t know there was any heat before. I didn’t,” the former Everton boss said to Football London.
“I was surprised because to be fair, Andy has done everything I have asked of him in training, he has been correct.”
Correct or not, it is obvious that Carroll needs something of an attitude adjustment.
Criticising fans is one thing, but his elbow which could have easily resulted in a red card was rather ridiculous from the 28-year-old, who has already been sent off for that sort of foul this season.
