West Ham United were soundly beaten by Liverpool in the Premier League yesterday.
Hammers boss David Moyes addressed the media in the aftermath of his side’s disappointing 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield yesterday, and highlighted his defeatist approach to the game by suggesting how important it was for West Ham not to have lost by more than three goals, as quoted by the club’s official website.
The east London outfit were second best from the very first whistle against Jürgen Klopp’s side yesterday, and despite going close a couple of times in the first half, they never really stamped their authority on the game.
The Hammers now sit rather precariously in 13th spot in the Premier League table, just three points clear of the drop zone, and yesterday’s result will surely serve as a warning that their top flight status is far from secure.
Moyes spoke to reporters after the game at Anfield yesterday, and explained why it was so important for his side to keep the scoreline at 4-1, as quoted by the club’s official website:
“It was important that we didn’t lose by an even heavier margin, because goal difference could be important come the end of the season.”
West Ham now face a vitally important couple of games with a trip to Swansea City followed by a home game against Burnley next up on the agenda.
Nothing less than four points will do for the Hammers, as they look to create more distance between themselves and the bottom three, and hopefully goal difference will be the last thing from Moyes’ and his players’ minds.
