West Ham United have been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons of late.
West Ham are third from bottom in the Premier League with just two wins from their opening 12 games of the season.
Slaven Bilic has paid the price for his part in the Hammers’ dismal campaign and David Moyes has replaced him much to the disappointment of West Ham fans.
Before being sacked, Bilic left Hammers fans with a parting gift in the shape of a memorable 3-2 win over fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur after being 2-0 down in the Carabao Cup at Wembley.
It was a rare highlight in a gloomy season for the Hammers and things don’t look like getting better anytime soon.
A 2-0 defeat in Moyes’ first game in charge last time out leaves the East Londoners facing an uphill task to make it anywhere near 20 points at the halfway stage of the season.
And it all smacks of the last time a West Ham side only seemed to turn up for League Cup games back in the 2010/11 season.
Under the hapless Avram Grant the Hammers looked set to make the final when they led 3-1 on aggregate against Birmingham with just 30 minutes left of the two-legged semi-final.
Birmingham pulled two goals back to force extra-time and they scored within minutes of the restart and went on to beat Arsenal in the final before joining the Hammers in being relegated to the Championship.
The Hammers finished bottom that season so while a cup run is always a bonus, Moyes should heed a warning from past experiences and focus all the club’s efforts on survival.
