West Ham United were soundly beaten by Manchester City in the Premier League yesterday.
West Ham manager David Moyes addressed the media in the aftermath of his side’s disappointing 4-1 home defeat to Manchester City yesterday, and explained the real reason behind taking Manuel Lanzini off in the 66th minute – a decision that was booed by the London Stadium crowd, as quoted by Football.London.
The Hammers now sit rather precariously in 15th spot in the Premier League table, just three points clear of the drop zone, and if they were to lose at Leicester City on Saturday, they could find themselves inside the bottom three, if results elsewhere don’t go their way.
Moyes arrived in east London with the Hammers inside the bottom three way back in November, and there have been plenty of positive signs since he took over.
Inconsistency continues to undermine their hopes of finishing inside the top 10, however, and relegation down to the Championship now seems like a very real prospect for them
The Scot spoke to reporters after his side’s defeat to City yesterday, and responded when asked why he chose to take Manuel Lanzini off with around 25 minutes remaining in the game, as quoted by Football.London:
“Yeah totally accept it. But everybody should look at the fourth goal, and then they’ll maybe see why. The players here have got to understand, we play players to keep the ball, to defend. Manu had a great chance to keep the ball for us and we end up losing the fourth goal for it. But hey, no problem – it happens.”
Moyes is likely to ring the changes for his side’s trip to Leicester at the weekend, but whoever plays will have to show far more than they did at home to City yesterday, if they are to have any chance whatsoever of returning to east London with anything to show for their efforts.
