David Moyes shares his thoughts on Rangers manager Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard in his first managerial season with Rangers and he will be hoping to lift some silverware next season.

David Moyes has stated in a blunt fashion that the manager of Rangers has to win trophies as he felt that the club has ‘improved’ under Steven Gerrard’s guidance this season.

But Moyes felt that the Gers have faltered since the turn of the year as they prepare for their trip to Old Firm rivals Celtic on Sunday afternoon.

In December, Gerrard guided his team to a deserved 1-0 win over the Bhoys which put them level on points with their neighbours. But a number of indifferent performances since has seen them fall 10 points behind.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (26/03/2019 at 8:35 pm), Moyes shared his honest thoughts on the pressure in Glasgow and where the blue half have improved.

“I think if you are the manager of Rangers you have to win trophies,” Moyes told BBC Radio 5 Live. “But it’s the same if you’re the manager of Celtic and that’s what makes it difficult for whoever is in charge.

“But I think Steven is there for the long term – I think for him it’ll be about trying to improve and get Rangers better. I thought certainly in the opening half of the season, they did that. I thought they did improve. I thought they made some good signings. I thought they got the team playing better.

“I think since the turn of the year, they have not been so good.”

Following a successful playing career with Liverpool and England, Gerrard opted to dive into the deep end and take the managerial post at Ibrox in the summer.

Considering this is his first season as a manager, the former midfielder has proved his worth on a number of occasions and shown that he can build something at the club if given time.

With it looking highly likely that Rangers will catch Celtic in the Premiership title race there is no doubt that Gerrard will be looking to make his mark in Scotland next term.

The expectations and pressure on his shoulders will definitely increase, but with Brendan Rodgers no longer in the opposition dugout, it does weaken their Glasgow neighbours.
