West Ham returned to winning ways after beating London rivals Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Hammers secured their first Premier League win in seven games after beating Antonio Conte’s men 1-0 at the London Stadium.
Marko Arnautovic scored the only goal of the match in the sixth minute to give David Moyes his first victory as West Ham manager.
After the match, Moyes spoke about his tactical plans regarding the game. He said that having an extra defender is risky because the team can get outnumbered in the middle of the pitch.
Moyes, 54, adds that Chelsea were really good with the ball at times. West Ham tried to stop them from dominating the game, and they were successful in implementing that.
“I think against the top teams it’s very hard now. What happens when you have an extra defender is you get outnumbered in the middle of the pitch and you can’t get a press high enough up the pitch, because you can’t have two boys who are close enough,” said Moyes, as quoted by Football London.
“Whatever you do, you’re trying to patch up bits to stop the opposition dominating the game. I thought Chelsea were really good with the ball at times. They’re excellent at football, but I thought we filled the spaces and gaps and tried to limit them to as few chances as possible.”
Despite winning the match, the Hammers still remain in the bottom three, but there are plenty of positives for Moyes and his team.
West Ham enjoyed only 31% of possession, and had only five shots during the course of 90 minutes, according to BBC Sport.
