David Moyes has been speaking to the media about Winston Reid’s current situation at West Ham, after he returned from Sporting Kansas City.

The 25-cap New Zealand international – who the Hammers paid £5 million for – recently returned to the London Stadium after spending time in Major League Soccer.

Unfortunately for the 32-year-old, Moyes has Angelo Ogbonna, Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena to choose from as well as him.

As a result, the former Everton boss has said Reid can go out on loan if he wants.

Claret and Hugh quote the Hammers boss as saying: “He had a bit of time off when he got back from America. He’s going to play for the under-23s tonight and he’s been training for the last two to three weeks. It’s a little bit like Reid doing his pre-season.

“We have him back and if he wants to go out on loan we’ll be open to that. But we’re also very happy to have him around the place. He’s been a great ambassador for the club and he’s someone I respect greatly. At the moment we have four centre-halves who are competing for positions and we don’t have too many openings in that area at the moment.”

In our view, if the Auckland-born defender does want to play football, he should take Moyes up on his offer.

Dawson and Ogbonna have struck up an impressive partnership during this impressive winning run of late, and look irreplaceable right now.

But, if something were to happen to one of them, you would imagine Balbuena or Diop would be next in line to come in, as they’ve been working under Moyes longer than Reid.

His pathway into the first-team seems very unclear, to say the least.

Having said that, The Athletic state that Liverpool have made an enquiry for Diop.

If the Frenchman leaves before Reid does, then perhaps it might be worth him sticking around.
