Sunderland are currently bottom of the Premier League table.
Sunderland manager David Moyes has told the Shields Gazette that if anything is going to lift his players it is the club’s loyal fans.
The Black Cats have endured another disastrous start to the season and are without a win in their first eight games of the campaign.
Their winless run continued on Saturday afternoon as they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by fellow strugglers Stoke City.
It left Moyes’ team rooted to the bottom of the Premier League with just a point to their name.
Confidence at the club and among the fans is at a low once again, but Moyes says there is one thing that can lift his squad and that is the support they are receiving from the terraces.
“We’re looking for a win to give us a lift and give us a bit of momentum, something we can start from. That’s the hard bit,” he told the Shields Gazette.
“If anything is going to lift the players, it’s the fans – the way they supported the team. The lads had a great backing from the supporters who never gave up on the players. The supporters are sticking with the club and the players.”
While the Sunderland fans are sticking by their team at this moment in time, Moyes and his team will need to turn things around quickly to keep it that way.
The loss to Stoke was disappointing in itself but the manner in which they lost the game was arguably even worse.
It was reminiscent of a performance that comes from a team whose manager is at the end of his reign, not in the early stages.
A change is needed quickly if they are to avoid yet another relegation battle, starting with their trip to West Ham next weekend.
