Sunderland are fighting against relegation, and will look for quality in January.

Sunderland manager David Moyes has told the Sunderland Echo that he is looking to add ‘a bit of quality’ to his side during the January transfer window.

The Black Cats lost 2-0 at title challengers Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, but Moyes’ side were strong defensively, forcing Liverpool and their sensational attack to wait until the 75th minute to open the scoreline.

Losing was a blow for Sunderland when they defended so resolutely, but their performance – coupled with prior wins over Bournemouth and Hull City – have given Sunderland hope of surviving the drop again.

Moyes still has plenty of work to do given that Sunderland sit bottom of the table, but they’re just three points from safety – and if Sunderland can take anything from beating the drop last season, it’s that January could be key.

Former boss Sam Allardyce made three big signings in January last season, as defender Lamine Kone, holding midfielder Jan Kirchhoff and playmaker Wahbi Khazri came in and were key in Sunderland’s run to safety.

Moyes will be hoping to do the same having had very little time to do transfer work before August’s transfer deadline, and he’s now commented on his plans.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Moyes suggested that he has a resolute group of players at his disposal, but needs to bring in more quality to make sure that they have a chance of staying up.

Moyes add that he hopes to add players, specifically players who can take Sunderland ‘up a notch’ – and fans will be hoping that his plans pay off, and quality players can arrive at the Stadium of Light in 2017.

“I think we need to add a level to take us up a notch,” said Moyes. “The club has always had a resolute group of players because of the way Sunderland have kept themselves in the Premier League. We are trying to add a bit of quality and build the club up. We’ve got to hope that we are able to add,” he added.
