Speaking to the Mirror, Sunderland manager David Moyes has responded to Howard Webb labelling him a nightmare.

After naming Goodison Park as one of the toughest grounds to referee at, the former Premier League official then named the former Everton boss as his fiercest critic.

He told the Mirror; “I think one that probably gave me the most stick really, or I felt held no love for the referee profession was David Moyes. And he would be quick to criticise me, not particularly from the technical area.”

Most managers would be disappointed to hear such a statement, but the current Black Cats manager is not one of them.

On the contrary, the Scot is instead delighted by Webb’s comments, insisting it just shows his passion for winning games.

“It was part of wanting to win and part of making sure you do win,” he told the Mirror.

“I think I am a bit more mature now. Everton was a tough place to go for any referee and we made sure they knew about it.”

“I don’t think I am like that anymore but I don’t want to lose that. I do realise how difficult the job is.”

Sunderland will now be hoping that Moyes can put some of that fire into turning the club’s fortunes around this season.

It has not been a happy start to life for him in the North East, with him currently going eight games without a win since taking charge in the summer.

It leaves them sitting bottom of the Premier League already with just a point to their name and Moyes will need to give his all to ensure another relegation fight is not on the cards.
