Everton drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
Ex-Everton boss David Moyes has told Sky Sports that he was impressed with the Toffees against Liverpool – and thinks Jurgen Klopp’s comments summed up their battling display.
Everton went into Sunday’s Merseyside derby having beaten Cardiff City 3-0 in midweek, giving Marco Silva a much-needed victory after a poor run.
The Toffees were still underdogs against Klopp’s title-chasing Reds, but they produced a superbly committed display at Goodison Park.
The aggression and desire was there for all to see, and there were a couple of last-ditch challenges to stop Liverpool scoring as players threw their bodies on the line.
Everton fans will be delighted with the performance more than the result itself, as Silva’s side looked more like the Everton of old rather than the frail outfit they’ve often seen this season.
The last Everton manager to beat Liverpool, David Moyes, was in the studio for the game on Sunday, and he hailed the performance from his former club.
Moyes praised Everton for their intensity, believing fans finally got to see a brand of football they enjoyed, full of great energy even if it wasn’t the best technical display.
Moyes added that Klopp got it spot on by claiming it was a ‘tough’ game, with the Scot noting that few people have found Everton a tough proposition this season, and it’s good to see them back to that.
“I thought Everton did everything they had to do,” said Moyes. “They kept their intensity up for most of the game and probably late on they had as many half chances as Liverpool did. They will be really pleased. The crowd have been sitting on their hands here for weeks, waiting for something like that, maybe it needed this type of game, obviously taking points off Liverpool meant a lot to them, but I thought the performance was good. They were energetic, they could have played better football at times, but overall against a really good team they did a good job.”
“They tried to press Liverpool early and showed a big intensity which they haven’t shown in their game. They didn’t take many risks at the back and they decided to make it more ugly. Everton got their tactics right to get a result against Liverpool. The big thing for me – and Jurgen Klopp said it at the end – was this was a tough game today. That was different from what people have been saying about Everton in a while. I think Liverpool came off the pitch saying this was a tough game,” he added.
