David Moyes provides Sunderland fitness update

Sunderland are set to take on Watford at the Stadium of Light this weekend.

David Moyes has told the Chronicle that Sunderland trio Victor Anichebe, Steven Pienaar and Javi Manquillo could all miss out on playing this weekend.

Anichebe, Pienaar and Manquillo all failed to win their races against fitness to play for Sunderland yesterday evening against Chelsea.

In their absence, the Black Cats put in a credible display, but fell to a 1-0 defeat against the current league leaders.

And Moyes has hinted that he could be without the first-team trio again when his Sunderland side host Watford on Saturday.

“Victor and Steven weren’t available, and Manquillo could have been involved tonight but he got injured in training on Sunday,” Moyes said.

“They were the three who missed out through injury.

“I don’t know if they will be available for the weekend. We’ll have a look tomorrow and see how they are.”

Of the injured players, Anichebe is likely to be the biggest miss for Sunderland.

The powerful forward has been in brilliant form since signing at the Stadium of Light, and he has netted three goals in his last five appearances.

Despite Sunderland’s recent improvement, they are still in serious relegation trouble.

Moyes’ side are currently stuck at the foot of the Premier League table, and they will be under pressure to get back to winning ways against Watford.
