West Ham United boss David Moyes has made strengthening his midfield and defensive options a priority this January.
West Ham are in the market for ‘three or four’ new signings during the January transfer window.
David Moyes has helped push the Hammers up the Premier League table but he knows he must bring in more quality and bodies to help secure survival.
And West Ham have received a boost after one of the Scot’s prime targets Alfie Mawson – as reported by the likes of The Sun – admitted to Sky Sports that he has found the interest ‘flattering’.
“Whatever happens, happens,” Mawson told Sky Sports.
“If offers come in then that is nothing to do with me. All I can do is affect my performances. I’m a Swansea player and I want to do well here.
“It is flattering to hear certain things but I have got to do what I can for this club. I’m contracted for another two-and-a-half years after this, whether that is in the Championship or hopefully in the Premier League, I am signed to be here so that’s all it is at the moment, it’s just talk.”
West Ham actually have plenty of options at centre back with everyone fit but Moyes has two major problems.
The first is that he rarely does ever have all his defensive options available and his backline is constantly changing which is not conducive to consistency.
The second is that even with everyone fit the Hammers have a worryingly aged rearguard with James Collins and Jose Fonte both 34 this season and Pablo Zabaleta 33.
Mawson, who has also been linked with Watford, would add much needed quality, power and at 23 years old, youthful exuberance alongside other emerging young West Ham defenders such as Declan Rice, Reece Burke and Reece Oxford.
The former Brentford man would also had a threat from attacking set pieces with a number of goals for the Swans over the last two seasons.
