Sunderland boss David Moyes has told the Chronicle that Joleon Lescott has had a massive impact since arriving in the January transfer window.

Lescott was brought in on a free transfer last month, as Moyes looked to improve his side’s defensive options.

The 34-year-old has made just one Sunderland appearance so far, after coming on as a substitute against Crystal Palace.

But Moyes insists that Lescott has been a good signing, as his experience is proving to be crucial in the dressing room.

“Joleon’s had a massive impact on the dressing room because he’s a leader, a really good organiser when he’s on the pitch,” Moyes said.

“He’s an experienced player, he knows a lot of them as well and he’s had a big impact on the dressing room.”

Lescott’s career has stuttered in recent years, with unsuccessful spells at both Aston Villa and AEK Athens.

He appears to have been brought to Sunderland as back-up, as Moyes’ side battle against the drop.

Sunderland are sat at the bottom of the Premier League table, and are currently in New York on a team bonding trip.

When the Black Cats return to action in two weekends’ time, they will take on Everton at Goodison Park.
