David Moyes has told TalkSPORT (Tuesday, 9.15AM) that he is “not surprised” Mikel Arteta is thriving as Arsenal manager having worked with the Gunners boss at Everton – and applauded the signing of captain Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League table after their best result of the season on Sunday, a 3-2 win over Liverpool. The Gunners have been excellent this term, winning their two Europa League games – and eight of nine league games.

The identity Arteta is looking to stamp at Arsenal is getting the best out of his young squad. The work in the transfer window has been excellent, with Edu only looking to sign players between 20 and 25 that are already experienced.

West Ham boss Moyes, who managed Arteta during the Spaniard’s time as a player, says he is not surprised that Arteta is impressing in the hotseat. He says Arsenal have built a top side, and picked out £30m Odegaard as his best signing.

“It doesn’t surprise me. Listening to TalkSPORT, there was a lot of people critical of Arsenal. But I think Arsenal have been a really good team for a while. They brought in Odegaard who makes things difficult for other teams.

“Working with Pep – giving him that guidance, he had the potential to make it work. He is a really diligent boy. He is going to make mistakes when you’re young. But he has put together a really good side.”

Rio Ferdinand made an excellent point over the weekend, following Arsenal’s win. While the Arsenal hierarchy have been criticised for a lack of communication, and supporting the Super League, they deserve praise regarding Arteta.

The Arsenal board have given Arteta plenty of time. And, plenty of cash to spend to mould the side into what he wants. They have ousted players that he felt did not fit the criteria – Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners have trusted Arteta despite it being his first job. They have accepted that the ex-Rangers and Arsenal player is going to make mistakes early on. Now, for that loyalty, they are reaping the benefits.
