West Ham United were extremely busy during the summer transfer window.
When speaking during a guest appearance on Sky Sports Super Sunday today (September 16th, 15:44), David Moyes responded when asked whether he would have taken a different approach to spending £100 million than the one that Manuel Pellegrini took during the summer transfer window.
Moyes was in charge of the Hammers last term, but was given his marching orders when the season finished, making way for Pellegrini in the process.
The Chilean spent heavily during the off-season, bringing nine new faces into the London Stadium, but West Ham struggled to get going this season.
Pellegrini’s men did manage a win at Everton, today, however, and they finally looked like somewhat of a unit.
Moyes, though, explained how he would have gone down a different route to the one the Chilean took in the summer, when speaking live on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday programme:
“It’s the manager’s prerogative to spend it how he wants to spend it. I think I would have probably gone in a slightly different direction. I think what we saw last year was that we didn’t have a very good defensive record, we had to try and sign defenders and make sure we were harder to beat. Going forward I think we were very good. I think the bigger problem was trying to find a way to stop goals.”
Today’s magnificent performance at Goodison Park highlighted just how good the Hammers can be, once they gel together as a unit.
Pellegrini seems to have found a system that works, with three central midfielders playing closely together, whereby his front three players are given more time and space to flourish.
And if the east Londoners continue to play with the same style and tempo that they displayed today, the Chilean’s summer transfer business will surely be vindicated.
