West Ham United appear to be playing a clever game in the January transfer window, by trying to weaken their relegation rivals at the same time as strengthening their own squad.

David Moyes is already assessing his options ahead of the transfer window opening in a few days’ time, and West Ham’s list of targets is intriguing.

The Hammers are said by the Daily Mirror to be after Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson, Stoke City’s Joe Allen and Bournemouth’s Harry Arter.

It is notable that all three players are key men for teams around them in the Premier League table.

West Ham are locked in a relegation battle, and if they were able to sign any of the trio, they would land a major blow on one of the teams that they are competing for survival with.

Mawson, Allen and Arter have all been vital players for their respective sides this term.

And while they would all improve West Ham’s team, if Moyes could get a deal over the line for any of the trio, it would have the added bonus of denting their relegation rival’s survival chances.
