Liverpool beat Sunderland 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday.
Quoted by the Liverpool Echo, Sunderland manager David Moyes has responded to Jurgen Klopp’s comments about his team being defensive.
Sunderland travelled to Anfield on Saturday looking to make it three wins out of three and escape from the relegation zone.
They were unable to do that as goals from Divock Origi and James Milner saw the Reds to a 2-0 victory.
In truth, it was a tough afternoon for Sunderland, who spent large periods on the defensive trying to frustrate the home team.
After the game, Klopp was less than complimentary about his opponents’ tactics and now Moyes has responded to those comments.
“We don’t have the same quality as Liverpool,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“I knew we had to come here and defend. They won 6-1 here the other week so we didn’t want to come here and get rolled over that easy.
“I hope soon I can come with a team that can give Liverpool an open game. At the moment I don’t have the team to do that.”
In truth, despite the result Moyes was likely to be very pleased with the performance that his Sunderland side put in.
They faced 27 shots in total and the fact they only conceded two goals, and late ones at that, shows the impressive defensive display they put in.
For a side that has struggled in that department all season it will provide Moyes with heart and he will be hoping there is more to come as they look to escape their current relegation battle in the months ahead.
