The Chelsea goalkeeper was in fine form in the win over Sunderland on Wednesday.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Sunderland manager David Moyes has praised Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois following Wednesday’s clash.

League leaders Chelsea beat Moyes’ Black Cats on Wednesday evening, with the Blues picking up a narrow 1-0 victory.

In truth, Sunderland were fortunate to leave the Stadium of Light having lost by just one goal as Antonio Conte’s team enjoyed 19 shots in total.

They did nearly leave with a point, though, as a superb last-minute save from Courtois denied Patrick Van Aanholt from scoring a late leveller.

And Moyes was full of praise for the Belgian afterwards, saying he will earn all the plaudits for his saves.

“Coming off the pitch, I think we can say we had a right go at a top team,” he told the Chronicle.

“We got better in the second half and we finished the game quite strongly, but we just didn’t quite have enough to get something out of the game.

“Their goalkeeper made two great saves. The first one was a good save but the second one will get all the plaudits, because of the type of save it was.”

Moyes will now be hoping that more goalkeepers do not perform as Courtois did as he and his side look to escape their current predicament.

The Black Cats are currently bottom of the table and four points from safety after 16 games of the season.

They need to start picking up wins after managing just three so far, and their cause would not be helped if they come up against ‘keepers in the kind of form Courtois showed on Wednesday.
