Sunderland were quite busy in the summer transfer window.
Sunderland manager David Moyes has told Sky Sports that he is happy with his side’s transfer business, as he cites progress and a slow build-up before giving the club a true identity.
The Black Cats experienced a rather eventful summer what with Sam Allardyce leaving the club to take over the England managerial post and being replaced by former Everton manager Moyes.
Moyes did not have too long to assess his new squad and make significant changes, but he did manage to bring in as many as seven new players, including goalkeeper Mika.
Speaking to the media ahead of his side’s encounter with Everton on Monday, the Sunderland boss claimed that he was happy with his side’s transfer business, although he warned that they are some way off being the finished article.
“We’re happy because we were able to bring in new players and we needed to,” Moyes told Sky Sports.
“We’re only in our first transfer window – it’s going to take three or four transfer windows here at Sunderland to get us a side which I feel hopefully will represent the club the way it should be represented.
“The job is to make a bit of progress every year and try to give this club back a real bit of identity.”
Sunderland managed to strengthen key areas of the squad, with defenders Paddy McNair and Papy Djilobodji adding to the back five, while midfielder Didier N’Dong also joined the Black Cats in the summer transfer window.
The Wearside club have picked up just one point from their opening three matches, but there is no doubt the club have a stronger playing squad and much more optimism than 12 months ago.
The lack of goals could still be a worry, and should Jermain Defoe pick up an injury, then the club may have to pin their hopes on free agent Victor Anichebe rediscovering his best form in front of goal.
