Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford should not be dropped despite a number of high-profile errors this season, according to Toffees ex-manager David Moyes.
The 25-year-old England international has made the number one jersey his own for both club and country, helping the latter reach the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
However, this term Pickford has made a number of mistakes, such as the late blunder to gift Liverpool’s Divock Origi the winner in December and his overall display in the 3-2 loss against Newcastle United earlier this month.
His error for the Magpies’ equaliser was his fourth leading to an opposition goal this season and seventh error leading to either a shot or a goal, both higher than any other player in the Premier League this term (BBC Sport).
Moyes was asked by beIN Sports whether he would drop Pickford were he in charge at Everton, and the Scot, who worked with the stopper at Sunderland, stated that he would not do so.
“When I had Jordan at Sunderland I always thought he was number one,” said Moyes. “Vito Mannone was in at the time. It gave him the chance to come in. When Jordan got injured and I put Vito back in the minute Jordan was back fit I put him back in.
“Now, I think Jordan needs to keep playing. I think Jordan Pickford makes saves. I think he’s made some mistakes, but he’s young, he’s still got a lot of development to go maturity wise. In [the 2-0 win over Chelsea] I think he’s made a couple of half-decent saves.”
Pickford has made the cut for Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad, being selected alongside Jack Butland of Stoke City and Tom Heaton of Burnley.
