Sunderland were beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium last night.

David Moyes has claimed to the Daily Mirror that he wouldn’t have criticised Sunderland’s players last night.

Sunderland were beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium, and their travelling supporters were left furious by the Wearsiders’ performance.

The Black Cats rarely threatened in the contest, and the packed out away end let their frustrations known.

Chants of ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ rang out around Middlesbrough’s home ground.

But Moyes feels that Sunderland’s supporters were being harsh on their own team, as his side’s performance in the contest was actually good.

“I wouldn’t have said that,” Moyes admitted. “They fought for the jersey tonight. I couldn’t name one who didn’t.”

Sunderland fell behind when Middlesbrough midfielder Martin De Roon hit the back of the net for the hosts in the first-half, and failed to get back into the match.

The defeat has surely ended any slim hopes Sunderland had of surviving this season.

Sunderland are now 12 points adrift of safety, with just five matches left to play this season.
