Jermain Defoe is set to miss out on playing in Sunderland’s EFL match against Queens Park Rangers.

David Moyes has confirmed that Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe will not play against Queens Park Rangers in the EFL Cup tomorrow evening.

Defoe is set to miss the fixture with an injury, which he picked up during Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

It was doubtful whether the experienced forward would have played in the cup tie anyway, but Moyes has confirmed that the former England international will be given a rest now.

Sunderland are determined to protect Defoe, as he is so crucial to their survival chances.

Defoe was Sunderland’s player of the season last term, as they narrowly avoided relegation, and he is under pressure to fire them away from the drop again this campaign.

The former Tottenham striker’s absence will provide one of Sunderland’s back up options a chance to prove their worth, though.

Moyes could call upon the likes of Duncan Watmore or Joel Asoro to play up-front against QPR, but new signing Victor Anichebe will not be fit enough to start.
