Sunderland manager David Moyes has given his view on West Ham United as his side travel to the London Stadium on Saturday, as quoted by the club’s official website.
The Black Cats have endured a dreadful start under the former Everton and Manchester United boss, winning none and losing six of their first eight Premier League games of the season.
West Ham, though not quite so abject, have also struggled desperately so far this term, recording just two wins from their first eight fixtures.
In truth, the Hammers main issue has perhaps been one of inconsistency. There have been good performances, or at least good parts to performances.
Moyes identified this lack of consistency as the London club’s problem, and admitted that he is targeting securing his first win as Sunderland manager at the London Stadium this weekend.
The Scot told the Black Cats website: “We want to get better, we want to play better and we want to show we are a better team. We have to get that first win under our belt as quick as we can to start moving up the league. One win would make a massive difference; it would lift confidence and it would get us much closer to the teams above us, while giving us the opportunity to build.
“It’s obvious to talk about Payet and Antonio has done very well, so I think they have good players but they also have heart in the likes of Collins, Noble and Reid who have been there a long time.
“I think they have a good team and they showed it last year, but you have to remember that prior to that they were a little inconsistent and they were never a team who were always near the top of the league. Prior to that they got relegated and came back up, so they’re trying to find their consistency as well.”
Moyes is clinging to the notion that one win can change Sunderland’s fortunes, and they desperately need to get their first three points under their belt.
If they manage that in East London this weekend, a serious inquest will have to begin at West Ham.
