West Ham United will recall Reece Oxford, but David Moyes can’t wait to work with him.
David Moyes has told West Ham United’s official website that he is excited about working with Reece Oxford.
The 19-year-old defender has been recalled from a season-long loan at Borussia Monchengladbach and will resume his West Ham career on Sunday.
It was Moyes’s predecessor Slaven Bilic who loaned him to the Bundesliga, and the Scottish manager told the Irons’ official website is enthused about welcoming him into his first-team squad after hearing people say good things about him.
He said: “It’s probably taken him a little bit of time to settle [in Germany], just like it would for any young player.
“But we’ve got him back and we’ll have a look at him. A lot of people have spoken really well about him, so we’ll see how he does over the coming months.”
The Guardian reported that Monchengladbach had hoped to agree a £17 million deal with West Ham for the talented teenager, but Moyes instead triggered an early recall clause.
It remains to be seen whether Oxford – who broke into the Hammers’ senior side at the age of 16 under Slaven Bilic – will play regularly under Moyes.
Despite making his debut two and a half years ago, Oxford has only managed six Premier League games since that win at Arsenal on the first day of the 2015-16 campaign and although he’s a huge talent, he’s also still very young and experience might be United’s best bet when it comes to avoiding relegation this season.
