Sunderland are set to play Championship football next season.
David Moyes has already admitted to the Shields Gazette that Sunderland’s wage bill will be a problem next season.
Sunderland’s relegation to the Championship means that they will be forced to offload players before they bring in any new talent.
And Moyes admits that reducing the amount Sunderland are paying in salaries will be crucial.
“The wage bill is big, and it will be a problem next year too because it will affect what we are able to do,” Moyes said.
“But what we need is players who are robust. If we are going to play 45-50 games next year, you need players who are able to play the majority of those.
“You need players who can play Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday-Wednesday nearly every week.
“Getting the wage bill down is something that will happen because everybody has that in their contract anyway. But it will still mean that our wage bill is high for the division, so that will need to be kept down as well.”
Sunderland look set to save a considerable amount of money on wages just through the sale of Jermain Defoe.
Defoe is set to leave the Stadium of Light in the coming months, with a host of Premier League clubs circling (Sunderland Echo).
Sunderland are also likely to sell many of the players who have struggled so badly this year.
The likes of Sebastian Larsson, Steven Pienaar and Fabio Borini may well head for the exit door at Sunderland.
The Black Cats still have three matches left to complete this season, with Moyes’ side next in action at the weekend when they take on Swansea City.
