Vito Mannone is set for a run of games in Sunderland’s first-team.
Sunderland boss David Moyes has told the Sunderland Echo that it was important that Vito Mannone proved his worth against Liverpool.
Mannone started for Sunderland in goal in their most recent match, which they drew 2-2 against Liverpool.
The Italian stopper pulled off a number of excellent saves during the contest, to help the Wearsider’s earn a point.
And Moyes says that it was vital that Mannone put in a good performance, to build up the trust that Sunderland’s players have in him.
“Vito played really well, especially after the Burnley game,” Moyes said.
“I think it was important for him, but also for the team as well to see, because we’ve needed our goalkeeper, whoever it’s been, and we needed him against Liverpool.”
Mannone has barely featured for Sunderland so far this season, due to the emergence of Jordan Pickford.
Pickford has become Sunderland’s number one goalkeeper, but the youngster is set to miss a sizeable chunk of the campaign with injury.
Mannone is, therefore, set for a run of games between the sticks at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Burnley in the FA Cup.
