Sunderland are set to spend a week in New York, to build their team spirit.

David Moyes has admitted to the Chronicle that his planned trip to New York with the Sunderland squad is not a conventional way to aim to improve his team’s form.

Sunderland are currently sat at the bottom of the Premier League table, despite a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace in their most recent match.

The Black Cats are locked in a battle against the drop, and Moyes wants his team to be united – as they head into a crucial stage of the campaign.

To do this, Moyes intends to take advantage of the two week break which Sunderland have coming up.

The Black Cats take on Southampton later today, but due to their FA Cup exit, they have next weekend free.

And Moyes is planning to take his team on a trip to New York, as a team building exercise.

“I have done it before, it’s something different,” Moyes said.

“I know how it works. It gives them something to look forward to. I told them last week and I hope they give me the same sort of response I got at Palace. I want the same again.

“The big thing for me is to get a team spirit so they look after each other on the pitch. I want them to build relationships off it too. I want both.”

Sunderland will be hoping to head to America outside the relegation zone.

If the Black Cats can pick up the three points today, the could move out of the danger zone, and up to 15th place.
