Victor Anichebe made his first start for Sunderland in the EFL Cup last night.
David Moyes has told the Shields Gazette that he is tempted to bring Victor Anichebe into his Sunderland starting line-up.
Anichebe made his first start for Sunderland last night in the EFL Cup against Southampton.
The Nigerian forward was unable to get on the scoresheet, as Sunderland fell to a 1-0 defeat, but his power caused the Saints defence some problems.
Anichebe currently looks likely to have to play a back-up role at Sunderland, as he is in direct competition with Jermain Defoe for a first-team place.
Sunderland have generally utilised a 4-2-3-1 system so far, but Moyes has hinted that he could look at changing to a tactic which incorporates two strikers.
“In the future it might be a temptation to play them both but we don’t want to change too much to the midfield because they need to get the ball to the forwards too,” Moyes said. “You need to get the balance right.”
Anichebe has worked with Moyes before at Everton, so he knows the target-man’s talents well.
The 28-year-old is still searching for match sharpness, as he missed much of pre-season.
Sunderland’s next match comes against Arsenal at the weekend, when Anichebe could feature.
