David Moyes admits being surprised by Everton fans over Sam Allardyce

David Moyes suggested that he was surprised by the way that the Everton fans have given Sam Allardyce plenty of flak since he arrived.

In comments reported by Football London, David Moyes insisted that he was a little surprised to see the way that the Everton fans have treated Sam Allardyce during the latter’s time in charge of the Toffees.

Moyes has proved to be a divisive appointment at West Ham, but it appears that he has not faced anything like the task that Allardyce has taken on trying to win over the Toffees fans.

The style of play and often underwhelming results have probably left many Everton fans hoping that Allardyce is no longer in the dugout beyond this season, especially after Moyes’ Hammers side beat the Toffees 3-1 on the final day of the campaign. And after the game, Moyes admitted that he has been surprised by what Allardyce has come up against in his time in charge.

“I can only ever talk good about Everton and what they are like, during my time they were fantastic. They gave me great support and backing, especially in the early days but people forget, we had a top team at Everton. Maybe it was only a bit of money missing from really challenging at the top end with the players we had,” he said, as reported by Football London.

“So, I think they probably enjoyed the team and what happened then. Am I surprised? I am a little bit, yes. They have always been a club that gets behind their players and their manager.”

Allardyce may well argue that he has done a good job given that he took over at a time that when avoiding relegation was on the agenda and he has not been given a summer window to make significant changes to the squad.

But with Everton finishing 10 points closer to the bottom three than the top four – something that seemed to be a potentially realistic ambition before the campaign began – Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright surely need to consider big changes during the coming months.

And while Big Sam may suggest that he has done enough to earn a full season at the helm, there appears to be more than enough Everton supporters who would disagree, and that should perhaps leave the Toffees hierarchy with plenty to ponder in the coming days.
