David Moyes accepts that Sunderland fans are sick of one particular factor in the club’s struggles

Few teams waste money quite like Sunderland and their embattled manager admits this has to change if they are to put an end to the misery.

Sunderland manager David Moyes has accepted that the club’s fans want to see better investments in the transfer market, according to the Chronicle.

The Black Cats have enjoyed very little luck with regards to bringing in new players in recent years, with the likes of Jeremain Lens, Fabio Borini and Jack Rodwell (below) all failing to live up to their hefty transfer fees.

To add insult to injury, Sunderland may have to splash out a further £10 million on Argentine flop Ricky Alvarez after failing to fulfil the contractual obligation to sign him on a permanent basis from Inter Milan if they avoided relegation last season, according to the Daily Mail.

And the arrival of Moyes in the summer has hardly improved matters either on the pitch or in the transfer market, with the club winless in all eight Premier League fixtures this season despite spending vast sums on the likes of Papy Djilobodji (below) and Didier N’Dong.

The Scot, who received public backing from Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain on Thursday due to increasing speculation over his future, has accepted that the club need to stop wasting their money if they are to have any chance of avoiding further misery at the bottom end of the table.

“I spoke to representatives of the supporters’ branches this week and took their questions and heard their thoughts,” said Moyes, as reported by the Chronicle.

“I got a sense of the damage that has been done over the years, and I know that they want to see the team doing better on the pitch and also in the transfer market.”

Bottom-of-the-table Sunderland spent almost £30 million on new players this summer though none of their 10 additions, including former Manchester United trio Adnan Januzaj, Paddy McNair and Donald Love, are yet to prove their worth on Wearside.

True, Sam Allardyce’s much-vaunted signings of Lamine Kone, Wahbi Khazri and Jan Kirchhoff helped guide Sunderland to yet another ‘great escape’ last season, but they are very much a rarity amongst the wreckage.
