Wigan Athletic goalkeeper David Marshall has told The Scottish Sun that he would love to make a return to Celtic this summer.

Fraser Forster’s loan at Celtic came to an end this summer, whilst Craig Gordon left the club to return to Hearts.

Scott Bain has started the season as Celtic’s first-choice stopper, but the Bhoys did also bring in Greek international Vasilis Barkas last week.

Barkas is likely to be Celtic’s first-choice moving forward despite Bain starting against Hamilton, and Celtic’s business in goal may well be done now.

Neil Lennon did carry three goalkeepers last season though in Forster, Gordon and Bain, so there could still be room for one more shot-stopper.

One name heavily linked was Marshall, as The Scottish Sun reported in July that Celtic were keen on the 35-year-old and he would jump at a return to Parkhead.

Wigan desperately need to raise funds, and Marshall could be one player to leave the Latics this summer, with the goalkeeper now commenting on the situation.

Marshall, who came up through the Celtic ranks and played alongside Lennon before leaving in 2007, claims he would ‘of course’ be interested in re-joining Celtic.

Marshall thinks a move back to Glasgow would be ‘massive’ for him because he grew up supporting Celtic, but he doesn’t know if the Bhoys will want him now they’ve signed Barkas.

“Of course it would. I think it would interest any player,” said Marshall. “But to a Celtic fan growing up, and someone who played there as a youngster coming through, it would be a massive thing for me.”

“I’ll just need to see how it all pans out. I haven’t heard anything from Celtic, but I’ll always have that affinity with them and it would be great if it happens. With Craig and big Fraser leaving Celtic, there was talk of me going there. The administration at Wigan happened and people were putting two and two together. Celtic have obviously now signed the boy Barkas from Greece, losing two keepers and bringing one in. I don’t know if they’re looking for another one,” he added.
