Liverpool are reportedly interested in raiding West Ham in the summer to sign Jarrod Bowen – but David James says he could see another Hammers star ending up at Anfield, in the form of England midfielder Declan Rice.
Bowen, 25, is in the form of his life at the London Stadium – having a hand in 23 goals during his 35 league and cup appearances this term. He has scored 12 times, and created 11. Many are calling for an England call-up.
The Liverpool Echo reported as recently as Tuesday that Liverpool remain interested in signing the ex-Hull man. But another West Ham star could be off in the summer, in Rice – as he continues to be linked with a move.
Speaking in an interview with GGRecon, ex-Liverpool goalkeeper James said he could see 23-year-old Rice ending up at Anfield. The England ace has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and both Manchester clubs.
Asked about City’s interest, James said: “I love Declan Rice. The West Ham side of me is saying: ‘No, He’s never going. He’s going to stay at West Ham until he’s 38′. Rodri and Fernandinho are class acts.
“I think Declan’s more mobile and covers a lot more ground. I could see it. Dare I say it, I could even see him going to Liverpool. He’s got everything,” James added. David Moyes recently said he is worth more than £100million.
James on Rice: Could Liverpool really sign West Ham star?
There is no doubt that Rice would be an incredible signing for any Premier League club, and probably any side in Europe at that. But right now, Liverpool simply do not need to spend all of their cash on a number four.
Liverpool do not have the spending power of a Manchester City, United or a Chelsea. They have to identify where they require additions, and look for the smart money. Luis Diaz was certainly that, at around £40million.
But more than £100million on Rice, when they already boast Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Thiago and the highly-rated Tyler Morton is not money well spent. They are better off looking to improve elsewhere.
